The only issue I had, which you'd have with the iPhone even if it was on a contract, is that if you use Firefox, you'll need to setup a sync between Firefox and either Safari or Internet Explorer. iTunes can only sync bookmarks from those two browsers, NOT Firefox. It works absolutly fine, all the sync features work - music, contacts, mail, and so on, with Outlook or whichever program you use.
